Information for Teachers

We Stood Up – Reflections on the Civil Rights Movement was designed to inspire educators, with a focus on reaching children in grades K-8. This one-of-a-kind audio anthology of first-person oral histories features interviews with civil rights icons, poetry and interviews conducted by children, and original songs by Grammy-winning artists. This album can be used in multiple ways.

First, it can serve as a springboard. We Stood Up can inspire discussions and activities relating to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Black History Month, President’s Day, anti-bullying efforts, school climate initiatives, social/emotional learning programs, educational technology, the arts, etc.

Teachers will also find rich, complete academic lessons, including instructional directions and student-facing materials. These standards-aligned lessons combine the songs and transcripts from We Stood Up with other materials and are ready to incorporate into ELA and Social Studies curricula.

Finally, we provide an annotated track-by-track listing of all the songs and interviews in We Stood Up so that teachers have an at-a-glance view of resources available to augment other lesson plans and programs.
